María José Cristerna Méndez from Mexico, also known as the ‘Vampire Woman,’ is a fanatic of art modifications. She holds the record title for most body modifications (female) with a total of 49 modifications, as verified in 2012.
Maria José was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco. She is a lawyer, activist, businesswoman, and a professional tattoo artist. She owns a tattoo studio and promotes her clothing line called Vampire Lady.
Her most significant modifications are:
- Transdermal implants on her forehead chest and arms
- Dental Implants
- Multiple piercings in her eyebrow’s lips, nose, tongue, ear lobes, belly button, and nipples.
Cristerna comes from a very religious family and is the oldest of two siblings.
At a very young age, Maria Jose got her first tattoo: a logo of her favorite metal band, Bathory. This tattoo is located on her left arm and covers nearly her entire shoulder.
“In the beginning, my dad didn’t agree with the idea. But after that, he took me to the tattoo studio to get my very first tattoo.”
“Art runs through my veins. Since I was a little kid I loved art and now I can express it through my body” Maria Jose adds.
Her first implant body modification occurred when she was 30 years old. At that time, Cristerna decided to do an implant on her forehead as a statement of liberation, strength, and empowerment.
Cristerna shares that her modifications are the result of a ten year marriage in which she felt repressed to express herself and scared to show her true self. She was also a victim of emotional and physical domestic abuse. Now, she wants to stand for all of women who have suffered from emotional, psychological, and physical abuse.
“The only way to escape from violence and abuse is by loving yourself. We came to this world to be happy,” says Maria Jose.
Her modifications are a sign of courage, strength, and freedom from her past.
Every modification is very special to her. They are part of her personality, authenticity, and renaissance as a woman.
The most painful modifications for Maria Jose were her eye pigmentations, in addition to her recent ‘modifications’ gained by bodybuilding.
Bodybuilding is a human form of body modification that involves intensive muscle hypertrophy for aesthetic purposes.
She has been training for several months and says this is the most challenging modification yet. She mentions that it requires a lot of mental strength, discipline, and courage.
Holding a Guinness World Records title is a big achievement for Maria Jose.
“You always can reach your goals. There are no limits. Nothing is impossible if you set your mind to it.”
As of today, Maria Jose has 49 modifications, but eventually plans to cover 100% of her body in tattoos.
Her friends and family are very proud of seeing the woman she has become.
“I don’t care what people think about me. I put myself in first place. I know who I am and that is what is important”.
The most body modifications (married couple) is from Latin America with an incredible total of 84.
