The eighth edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup was hosted by Australia and ran from 16 October to 13 November 2022. After 45 group-stage and knockout matches, England lifted the trophy for a second time by beating Pakistan in the Melbourne final. Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan is the leading wicket-taker in the competition’s history, with 47 scalps in 36 matches in 2007–22. Shakib has appeared at all eight editions to date, and has also weighed in with 742 runs for his team.

Sri Lankan leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva is the second bowler to achieve leading wicket-taker status at two Men’s T20 World Cup tournaments, after Pakistan’s fast-medium seamer Umar Gul picked up 13 wickets apiece at the 2007 and 2009 editions.

Hasaranga has had an explosive start to his T20 World Cup career: from 61 overs in 16 matches across two tournaments (2021–22), he has taken 31 wickets. Hasaranga was the top bowler in 2021 with 16 victims (including a hat-trick against South Africa), and in 2022 he repeated the trick with an unmatched 15 wickets and an ever-growing reputation.
