On 26 December 2017, personal computer time donated to the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS) by subscriber Jonathan Pace discovered a new prime number having 23,249,425 digits. The new prime number, known as M77232917, was found by calculating the result of 2 to the power of 77,232,917 and then subtracting 1. At nearly one million digits larger than the previous record prime number, this new prime number sits in a special class of extremely rare numbers known as Mersenne primes. It is the 50th Mersenne prime ever discovered.
