The best-selling videogame heroine is the archaeologist and adventurer Lara Croft. She is the protagonist of the Tomb Raider series, which has achieved 44.5 million confirmed sales as of 21 March 2019, according to VGChartz.
The Tomb Raider series was originally published by Eidos Interactive, who produced a series of massively successful games between 1996 and 1999. The series couldn't keep up this momentum on the next generation of consoles, however, and went on hiatus after the poorly received Tomb Raider: Underworld (2008). In 2013, the series was rebooted under new publisher Square Enix, and has gone on to be a critical and commercial success.
