Fairy Trails blazed a trail for augmented reality (AR) on the iPhone when it was released in the App Store on 26 September 2009. The game uses the iPhone’s camera and compass to generate virtual fairies and butterflies within the real world. Players have to try to catch them in “jars” by tapping on the iPhone’s touch-screen. The more fairies captured, the more power gained to detect other fairies.
