At the annual Festival of the Cuy (guinea pig) in Huacho, Peru, guinea pig is pitted against guinea pig in a series of contests to find the fattest, fastest and even best dressed. The stakes are high: only the winners are spared entry to the final contest, the tastiest guinea pig of the day, in which they are stuffed, roasted, smoked and grilled. Guinea pig is a traditional (and almost inexhaustible) source of low-fat protein in the Andes.
