The discovery of the world's oldest wall painting, comprising a series of precise red, black, and white rectangles, was publicly announced in October 2007. Carbon dating revealed that it was from around 9000 BC, and it was found below ground at Djade al-Mughara, a Neolithic settlement on the Euphrates River northeast of Aleppo, Syria. Measuring 2 m (6 ft 6 in) by 2m (6 ft 6 in), it is believed to have originally formed part of the circular wall of a large house.
