Grand Theft Auto has been the most consistently controversial video game series in history. As of July 2008, over 4,000 news stories have been published on the game's many objectionable associations, including accusations of glamourised violence, alleged connections with real-life crimes and the presumed corruption of gamers. Over 20 law suits against Grand Theft Auto creators Rockstar have been put through the United States legal system since the first game was released in 1998 and so far only one has been successful. The 'Hot Coffee' scandal cost the company over $1m (£500,000)in legal fees and Rockstar agreed to compensate any consumers who were offended by the content. However only 2,676 consumers applied for compensation, representing 0.02% of the 13 million people who bought the game.
