The Great Manmade River Project was begun in 1984. Its aim is to transport water from vast underground natural aquifers to the coastal cities of Libya. To date, more than 5,000 km (3,100 miles) of pipelines have been completed, capable of carrying 6.5 million m³ (229.5 million ft³) per day from around 1,000 water wells in Libya’s desert.
