The KBC Void, also known as the "Local Hole," is an immense region of space with an abnormally low density of galaxies and other matter. Named after astronomers Ryan Keenan, Amy Barger, and Lennox Cowie who discovered it, the void is approximately 2 billion light years in diameter and is surrounded by filaments made up of clusters of galaxies, which in turn are made of stars, planets, gas, and dust. Our Milky Way is located inside the KBC void- the equivalent of being inside a hole in Swiss cheese- meaning our place in the universe is in the proverbial boondocks.
