The America’s Cup trophy was first won by the New York Yacht Club in 1851 at Cowes, Isle of Wight, England, and races for the Cup have been held at irregular intervals 33 times since. The 34th America’s Cup is scheduled to take place in San Francisco in 2013. The original trophy was won by the US schooner 'America' when she defeated 15 British yachts. The owners of ‘America’ eventually gifted the trophy as a challenge cup to the New York Yacht Club, where it remained for 132 years despite numerous challenges.
