The Ethiopian wolf (Canis simiensis) is the rarest species of wild dog in the world, and may also be the rarest carnivore of any type in Africa. At present, there are believed to be less than 450 specimens alive, and this already highly endangered species is very vulnerable to the threat of rabies. Indeed, at least 38 Ethiopian wolves have died from rabies since September 2003 in the Bale Mountains, Ethiopia, which is home to 300 individuals, and another 20-25 are believed dead as they have not been seen for a long time.
