SETI@home, launched on 17 May 1999 by the University of California at Berkeley, CA, USA, is a free downloadable software package that activates instead of a screensaver, when a computer is idle. It then uses the computer's processor to analyse radio radiation from the universe, in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. The astronomical data is collected from the Arecibo radio telescope, Puerto Rico. As of 18 March 2003, there were a total of 4,320,471 users around the world. Since its launch, SETI@home has amassed more than a million years of computing time.
