In 1960 a polar bear estimated at around 900 kg (1,984 lb) was shot at a frozen ice pack in the Chukchi Sea, west of Kotzebue, Alaska, USA. The bear was said to measure 3.5 m (11 ft 5 in) from nose to tail over the contours of the body, 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in) around the body and 43 cm (16.9 in) around the paws. Although these figures have been disputed, this specimen is still the most likely candidate for the heaviest bear ever to have been taken in the wild.
A Kodiak bear named Goliath at the Space Farms Zoo in Sussex, New Jersey, USA reportedly exceeded 900 kg (1,984 lb) in weight in the early 1980s. Owing to advanced arthritis, he was euthanatised in April 1991 aged 24 years old and weighing about 750 kg (1,653 lb).
