The tallest monument is the stainless-steel Gateway Arch in St Louis, Missouri, USA, completed on October 28, 1965 to commemorate the westward expansion after the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. It is a sweeping arch spanning 192 m (630 ft) and rising to the same height. It cost $29 million and was designed in 1947 by the Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen (1910-61).
