Backyard ultramarathons challenge competitors to complete a run of 6.706 kilometres (equivalent to 100 miles divided by 24) every hour until only one runner remains. Winners can only complete one more lap than the second-placed runner. Australian firefighter Phil Gore set a new world record at the Dead Cow Gully Backyard Masters, staged on a cattle farm outside Nanango in Queensland. Gore outlasted Sam Harvey (118 laps), running 495 miles (797 kilometres) across six days.
