The Caspian Sea, the world's largest inland body of water, is situated where south-eastern Europe meets the Asian continent. Its surface area is 371,000 km² (143,243 sq mi) and it measures 1,199 km (745 mi) at its longest from north to south, with a width ranging from 435 km (270 mi) to a minimum of 196 km (121.8 mi). Its total coastline is some 7,000 km (4,350 mi) in length. The water volume of the lake is about 78,200 km³ (18,761 cubic mi). It is bordered to the north-east by Kazakhstan, to the north-west by Russia, to the west by Azerbaijan, to the south by Iran and to the south-east by Turkmenistan.
