It is recorded that Pope St Agatho (reigned 678-681) was elected at the age of 103 and lived to 106, but recent scholars have expressed doubts. The oldest of the recent Pontiffs has been Pope Leo XIII (Gioacchino Pecci) who was born on 2 March 1810, elected Pope at the third ballot on 20 February 1878 and died on 20 July 1903 aged 93 years 140 days.
