Opened in 1993 and operated by Republic Services, the Apex Regional landfill located near Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, occupies an area of 2,200 acres (890 hectares), the equivalent of almost 1,250 soccer pitches. At its peak, it has received up to 15,000 US tons (13,600 tonnes) of municipal solid waste daily, though 9,000 US tons (8,160 tonnes) is now more typical, which also makes it the largest landfill in the USA by capacity.
The Apex Regional landfill is estimated to contain around 50 million US tons (45.4 million tonnes) of trash and has a projected lifespan of up to 250 years.
