On 4 February 1989, Canadian band Sheriff climbed to No.1 on the US Billboard 100 with the soft-rock ballad “When I’m with You”, which features a note timed at 19.3 seconds. Lead singer Federico “Freddy” Curci performed the soaring vocal – starting at 3 minutes 26 seconds – on the recording.

Other US chart-toppers with extended same-pitch vocal notes include Barbra Streisand and Donna Summer’s “No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)” from 1979 (14 seconds) and Barbra Streisand’s “Woman in Love” from 1980 (11 seconds). Donna Summer’s “Dim All the Lights” from 1979 (16 seconds) – the longest-held vocal note in a US hit single (female vocalist) – and Air Supply’s “All out of Love” from 1980 (16 seconds) narrowly missed the top spot.

“When I’m with You” reached No.61 on the Billboard Hot 100 on 11 June 1983 after appearing on their self-titled (and only) studio album in 1982. It was re-released in late 1988 and fared much better, knocking Phil Collins’ “Two Hearts” off the No.1 spot in its 18th week on the chart before making way for Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” the following week.
