The longest online quiz live stream is 48 hr 11 min 7 sec, achieved by Tom Finkill and Never Gonna Quiz You Up (both UK), in Bury, Greater Manchester, UK, on 23 to 25 August 2021.
Tom had worked in the entertainment industry for 18 years before the Covid-19 pandemic hit and lockdowns were implemented across the UK. With nothing to do while stuck at home, he decided to start planning an online event and “Never Gonna Quiz You Up” was born.
The quizzes were immediately very popular. Though free to play, participants were encouraged to donate to Royal Manchester Children's Hospital Charity, an organisation important to Tom and his family after the fantastic care they provided for his daughter who was born with Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH). On one single night they managed to raise over £2,000!
When the world began to open up again, Tom wanted to do one big event with the online platform he had managed to build during the lockdown, and settled upon a Guinness World Records title attempt. The response was incredible, and after nearly 5 months of planning, they were ready to go.
Questions were written by Tom and the team at SpeedQuizzing. Media interest – both locally and nationally – helped spread the word. When the time came to attempt the record, Tom felt prepared. His only oversight was the challenge of staying awake for 48 hours straight! Luckily he was able to power through and the event was a great success. Participants joined from all across the UK, as well as USA, Iceland, Spain, Vietnam, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, just to name a few.
The total amount raised for charity was £7,052.06, meaning since inception the quizzes have raised over £15K. The goal is to hit £20K before their 3rd anniversary show.
When asked what achieving the record means to him, Tom said it means “the entire world!!! To be classed as a Guinness World Records title holder means that you are in the elite in the world in a certain particular category, whether it's for hotdog eating, power lifting or livestream online quizzing, it means that we have a legacy to pass down and something truly memorable to have my name attached to. For my children (and subsequent grandchildren in the future) to be able to say "My Daddy is a Guinness World Records title holder" means the entire world to me. To know that my wife, my parents and family are proud of what I set out to do, and ultimately achieved, would be a dream come true. Hopefully, if my attempt inspires people to venture outside of their comfort zone, that they too can succeed in anything they put their mind to. They can achieve in helping others, and give themselves something to strive for. Maybe one day too... they could be a Guinness World Records title holder!!”
