The largest attendance at a women's sporting event is 110,000, and was achieved by the final of II Campeonato Mundial de Fútbol Femenil between Mexico and Denmark, held at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, Mexico, on 5 September 1971.

Twenty years before the first FIFA’s Women’s World Cup in 1991, a six-team international women’s football tournament was arranged under the auspices of the Federation of Independent European Female Football (FIEFF). The fixtures at the Azteca Stadium drew consistently high attendances, helped by the home nation reaching the final. However, it was Denmark who went on to lift the trophy, winning 3–0 courtesy of a hat‑trick by 15-year‑old Susanne Augustesen.
