Chester Racecourse, nicknamed Roodee, was originally created after the annual Goteddsday football match in the region was deemed too violent. It had its first recorded race on 10 January 1539.

The biggest event at the course is the Chester Cup which has run annually since 1824. It was originally called the Tradesmen's Cup until 1884 when it was formally changed.
