According to The-Numbers.com, as of 7 February 2019, actress-singer Meryl Streep (USA) is the all-time highest-grossing leading female star in musical films, based on the cumulative worldwide theatre takings – not adjusted for inflation – of $1,550,488,703 (£1,173,550,000) for Mamma Mia! (USA, 2008), Into the Woods (USA, 2014, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! (Sweden/UK/USA, 2018) and Mary Poppins Returns (USA, 2018). Streep played the lead roles of Donna Sheridan in the two Mamma Mia movies, The Witch in Into the Woods and Topsy Turvy Poppins in Mary Poppins Returns.


Streep claimed the record from Mamma Mia co-star Amanda Seyfried (USA), whose movie musicals – two Mamma Mia appearances as Streep's daughter, Sophie Sheridan, and her role as Cosette in Les Misérables (USA/UK, 2012) – have grossed a total of $1,413,799,293 (£1,116,310,000) worldwide.
