The first double amputee to climb Everest (8,848 m; 29,029 ft) was Mark Inglis (New Zealand), who reached the summit from the north side and with the aid of bottled oxygen on 15 May 2006. In 1982 Inglis had his legs amputated below the knees after they became frost bitten in an ice cave on Mt Cook in New Zealand, where he and his climbing partner had been trapped for two weeks due to bad weather.
