According to the 2018 edition of developer community website Stack Overflow's annual Developer Survey, the most dreaded programming language is Visual Basic 6.0. Only 10.1% of respondents who were working with the language said that they wanted to use it again in the future.

Visual Basic 6.0 is an event-driven programming language (i.e. one used to write software that responds to human inputs). The earliest versions of the language were developed at Microsoft and released in 1991 for use developing Windows applications. It is descended from the venerable BASIC language (first released in 1964) and hasn't been updated since 1998. Much of the animosity that developers have for this language probably comes from the environments in which they encounter it – typically old embedded systems or custom-made legacy applications in business settings.

A subset of the language, known as Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) is still used in spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Excel.
