Italy's Festival Della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo (Sanremo Music Festival), the longest-running annual TV music competition (national), began in 1951 and was first broadcast on Italian TV station Rai 1 in 1955. The event was the inspiration for its famous international counterpart, the Eurovision Song Contest, which began in 1956. Two Italian singers have won the Sanremo Music Festival four times: Claudio Villa (1955, 1957, 1962 and 1967) and Domenico Modugno (1958–59, 1962 and 1966).
