The tallest indoor roller coaster is Mindbender, located at the Galaxyland Amusement Park in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The ride, which opened to the public in 1985, stands 44 m (145 ft) tall.
This record is sometimes assigned to the Turbo Track roller coaster located at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi in the UAE, however the vertical section of this shuttle-type coaster is located outside the building it launches from. Mindbender was built between 1980 and 1985 by Anton Schwartzkopf Engineering, a firm which went bankrupt during its construction. Although it has become an established favourite in Alberta, its early years were plagued with problems and on 15 July 1986 three people were killed and another seriously injured when one of the cars detached and struck a pillar. This remains the second-worst roller-coaster accident on record (a crash at on the Battersea Park Big Dipper in London in 1972 killed 5).
