The longest ongoing storyline in a videogame without any kind of reboot, or extended gaps between releases, is Bandai Namco's Tekken, which has been running from its debut game on 9 December 1994 to its most recent iteration, Tekken 7, first released in arcades in 18 March 2015 – a total time of 20 years 99 days. The series' story revolves around a global martial-arts tournament and the Mishima family, who seem hellbent on destroying each other.

Although Street Fighter has been running longer, it is very difficult to determine exactly when it developed what can be defined as a clear back-story, and whether the story between games is continual rather than rewrites or revisions. Den of Geek once ran a feature, entitled: Street Fighter: Making Sense of the Story.
