The fastest person to sail in a monohull across the English Channel is Phil Sharp (UK), who set off from Cowes, Isle of Wight, UK, aboard his 40-foot offshore Class 40 yacht Imerys on 24 November 2016 at 06:38:27 UTC and sailed non-stop and single-handedly in 9 hours 3 minutes 6 seconds, crossing the finishing line in Dinard, France, on the same day at 15:41:33 UTC, at an average speed of 15.25 knots over the 138-nautical mile route. The speed record was ratified by the World Sailing Speed Record Council.
Sharp beat the existing monohull time of 12 hours 1 minute 31 seconds set by Jean Luc Van Den Heede (France) in November 2004 on the 85-foot monohull Adrien with an average speed of 11.5 knots.
