The ceratopsians were prehistory's famous horned dinosaurs, and the heaviest ceratopsian was the best-known of all – the three-horned Triceratops horridus. This massive herbivorous species weighed up to 14 tonnes, and existed around 68–66 million years ago during the late Cretaceous in North America.

The function of its famous trio of horns has long perplexed palaeontologists, but presently the most popular theory is that they served in a manner analogous to the antlers of deer, i.e., functioning in identification, display and courtship, especially as they are now known to have been supplied with blood, just like deer antlers.
