When
The largest species of frog or toad currently known to have existed is the devil toad Beelzebufo ampinga, which in spite of its name was actually a frog, not a toad. Native to Madagascar and dating from the late Cretaceous Period approximately 70 million years ago, this enormous frog is believed to have exceeded 40 cm long, with a particularly large head and huge mouth. Its first recorded fossil remains were discovered in 1993, but their species was not formally named and described until 2008. A member of the still-existing subfamily Ceratophryinae, housing the horned frogs, B. ampinga was a predator whose mouth had such a big gape that it may well have been able to eat creatures as sizeable as small dinosaurs. Interestingly, all other horned frogs are South American, so the former existence of B. ampinga on Madagascar hints at an ancient land link.
