When
Adventurer David Hempleman-Adams (UK) becomes the first person to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a balloon with an open wicker basket on 29 September 2003. Covering a distance of 4,427.4 kilometres in 83 hours 17 minutes, the feat is all the more impressive as he had no shelter from the elements (long-distance balloonists traditionally travel in pressurized gondolas). Travelling in an R-90 G-BYZX balloon, the journey took Hempleman-Adams from Sussex, New Brunswick, Canada, to Hambleton (near Blackpool) in the UK.
