The longest time that a female player has bee consecutively ranked chess world number one is 26 years 28 days, achieved by Grandmaster Judit Polgár (Hungary) between 1 February 1989 and 1 March 2015. Her quarter-century domination of the women’s rankings was finally ended by Chinese Grandmaster Hou Yifan.
Judit Polgár, along with her older sisters Susan and Sofia, was home-schooled by her chess-obsessive psychologist father László Polgár. Her experimental education was dominated by chess lessons and by the age of six Judit could hold her own in games against Master-level opponents.
