New Smyrna Beach, in Volusia County, Florida, USA, has clocked up a total of 238 recorded shark attacks, making this the resort where you are most likely to get bitten should you go for a paddle. So much so that the beach has become known as the "Shark Attack Capital of the World". Mercifully, most of the bites only amount to minor nibbles from hungry juvenile sharks, and miraculously there is yet to be a fatal incident documented. Experts believe New Smyrna’s reputation as a shark diner may simply be down to the large numbers of people in the water at any time (with the region’s warm climate and surfing culture), who venture in despite frequent shark sightings.
