In more than two centuries, several circuses have done intercontinental tours, but Italian-born equestrian-turned-American-circus-entrepreneur Giuseppe Chiarini (1823–1897) holds the record for the most extensive circus tours. From its creation in 1856, to the death of its owner in 1897, Chiarini’s Circus visited Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Burma, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Chile, China, Cuba, Cochin China (Vietnam), Colombia, the Dominican Republic, the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia), Ecuador, Haiti, Honduras, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Macao, Malaysia, Mexico (where Chiarini built a permanent circus in Mexico City), New Zealand, Panama, Peru, the Philippines, Portugal, San Salvador, Siam (Thailand), Singapore, Spain, the USA and the West Indies. Chiarini’s Circus visited most of these countries several times.
