The noisiest butterflies are male specimens of the cracker butterflies, whose several species belong to the genus Hamadryas, and occur throughout South America, Central America and southern North America. During their vigorous courtship flights, their forewings collide with one another, generating a very loud cracking sound (hence their species' common name) that can be heard by the human ear 30 m away.
