The longest species of viper is the South American bushmaster Lachesis muta, native to South America's equatorial forests east of the Andes and also the island of Trinidad. The longest known specimen was just under 3.65 m, which therefore also made it the longest specimen of any venomous snake species native to the western hemisphere.
