The most Ring magazine Fighter of the Year Awards won by an individual boxer is six, by Muhammad Ali (USA, b. Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr) in 1963, 1966, 1972, 1974–75 and 1978.

Fighter of the Year has been awarded by the prestigious American publication The Ring every year since 1928. In 2017, The Ring announced that it was retroactively awarding Ali the 1966 title, having excluded him from consideration at the time on account of his opposition to the US military draft in Vietnam.
