Tumen- Ulzii learned to play chess when he was in school as he watched his father regularly play chess with his friends. The rich history of chess in Mongolia further inspired Tumen- Ulzii to expand his collection.

As well as collecting chess sets, he also makes them himself from various materials such as birch, ebony tree roots, bone, stone, cow horns, casted and engraved from brass, bronze, copper, silver and gold.
