Yang Binglin, affectionately known as "Gamer Grandpa", has achieved a remarkable Guinness World Records title at the age of 88 by becoming the oldest gaming streamer (male).

His online gaming adventures have also made him the world's oldest videogames Bilibili content creator (male).

Hailing from Fuzhou, Fujian, China, Yang Binglin spent his earlier years in scientific research and engineering related to oil and gas drilling in southern Sichuan.

After retiring in 1996, he found joy in playing table tennis and video games.

Starting with some small games, Yang later expanded to adventure games like Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Sniper, and various puzzle games.

His collection grew steadily, amassing over 500 games as he embraced the evolving gaming landscape by acquiring the latest Xbox and PlayStation consoles, including a PS5 gifted to him by Sony and his young fans.

Dad-of-two Yang Binglin says his wife and kids have no objections to his gaming habits, and that it's actually become a bit of a family affair.

His grandson, Yang Yihuan, said: "Although he hasn't extensively travelled, games have served as a window for him to understand diverse cultures, histories, and scenic landscapes worldwide.

"Despite lacking real-world driving experience, Grandpa derives joy from the virtual driving experiences in games, showcasing his gaming prowess."

Remarkably disciplined, Yang allocates specific times each day for gaming, maintaining a healthy lifestyle. His dedication extends to note-taking, documenting strategies, insights, and completion times for each game - a testament to his sincere approach.

Yang Binglin's daily routine:

  • 6 a.m: Wake up and prepare breakfast
  • 7:30 a.m: Commute for a game of table tennis
  • 9:30 a.m: Visit the market for groceries
  • 12 p.m: Post-lunch nap
  • 3 p.m: Engage in gaming
  • 9:30 p.m: Retire for the night

"Day after day, never changing. Except for travelling," Gamer Grandpa added.

Interacting with thousands of young followers as a blogger, he appreciates their respect and love. Notably, the gift of a PS5 from his young fans holds a special place in his heart.

Expressing gratitude, he encourages young individuals to prioritize their responsibilities before indulging in gaming, ideally waiting until retirement to wholeheartedly pursue gaming.

"We learned from the internet that there was a lady overseas who applied for a similar record, so my grandchildren wanted to try it for me,” he said.

His decision to pursue the Guinness World Records title was also influenced by a desire to showcase that senior citizens can also contribute to and understand the world of gaming, challenging stereotypes about age and gaming.

Reflecting on his newfound title, Yang Binglin says it's an honour.

"I want to continue to contribute more in the role of a game blogger, guiding young people," he said.

"The game content painstakingly created by thousands of employees in game companies contains a lot of wisdom and life philosophy. I hope that children all over the world can truly enjoy and experience the good things in games. At the same time, they can apply what they learn to life and career, and games can inspire more inspiration. I hope every child can maintain their enthusiasm and live a good life and future earnestly."
