It's time for American football fans across the US to stock up on wings, beer, and potato chips ahead of the biggest date in the NFL calendar - Super Bowl Sunday.

Facing off for the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy this year are the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Whether you’re tuning in for the noteworthy commercials, Justin Timberlake's half time show or to see the winning team make their final touchdown, here are five records the two battling NFL teams currently hold to get you psyched for Sunday's showdown.

1. First undefeated regular season by an NFL team

Many are looking at long-time Super Bowl competitors the New England Patriots this Sunday, as they have quite a track record on the field. The team scored a 16-0 record in 2007, becoming the first team in NFL history to achieve an undefeated regular season since the league went to a 16-game schedule in 1978. The New England Patriots joined the 1934 Chicago bears (13-0), 1942 Chicago Bears (11-0) and 1972 Miami Dolphins (14-0) as the only undefeated regular season teams in the NFL's 88 year history.

2. Most touchdown passes in an NFL game (AMF)

The most touchdown passes thrown in the same NFL game by an individual is seven. This feat has now been achieved by eight players, as follows: Sid Luckman (Chicago Bears) v. New York Giants on 14 November 1943; Adrian Burk (Philadelphia Eagles) v. Washington Redskins on 17 October 1954; George Blanda (Houston Oilers) v. New York Titans on 19 November 1961; Y. A. Tittle (New York Giants) v. Washington Redskins on 28 October 1962; Joe Kapp (Minnesota Vikings) v. Baltimore Colts on 28 September 1969; Peyton Manning (Denver Broncos) v. Baltimore Ravens on 5 September 2013; Nick Foles (Philadelphia Eagles) v. Arizona Cardinals on 3 November 2013; and Drew Brees (New Orleans Saints) v. New York Giants on 1 November 2015. Foles will be on the field this Sunday as the Eagles receiver, so we'll see if he manages to surpass his own record. 

3. Most Super Bowl wins by a quarterback

The most Super Bowl wins by a quarterback is 5, achieved by Tom Brady from 2002 to 2017. Brady has won the Super Bowl with the New England Patriots in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2015 and 2017.

4. Most pass completions by a rookie, NFL season

While New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady boasts a few record-breaking accolades, leading quarterback of the Eagles, Carson Wentz, also holds an impressive title. In 2016, he set the National Football League record for most pass completions in a season by a rookie quarterback with 379 while playing for the Philadelphia Eagles. In doing this, Wentz surpassed the previous mark of 354 by Sam Bradford while playing for the St. Louis Rams in 2010.

5. Most Super Bowl appearances by a team

The most Super Bowl appearances by a team is 9, achieved by the New England Patriots from 1986 to 2017. The Patriots first appearance in the Super Bowl was against the Chicago Bears which resulted in a 46-10 defeat. Their most recent appearance capped their fifth win of the competition against the Atlanta Falcons with a result of 34-28. While they'll be adding to their record this Sunday, we'll see which team prevails in Super Bowl LII.
