The Brief
Lay’s, the internationally renowned potato chips brand, wanted to create ground-breaking activation as part of their campaign “stay golden”, which features Brazilian pop super star Anitta, and celebrates the power of joy in all forms.
The brand wanted to build further on the concept that real potatoes are the power behind Lay’s potato chips and were looking for the perfect way to turn potato-generated electricity into power to generate music.
The Solution
Moved by Anitta’s international hit “Envolver” and inspired by a simple science experiment, Lay’s decided to use potato-generated power to record a remix of the song, achieving the Guinness World Records tittle for highest wattage from a potato battery along the way.
On 16 December 2022 ZyynLabs and Frito-Lay North America (both USA) achieved the world record in a studio in Los Angeles, California.
Over 8,500 potatoes were fashioned into a potato battery that generated 11.43 watts. The remix of Anitta’s song recorded using potato energy became the soundtrack of the brand’s video commercial “Beat of Joy”.
Real potatoes are the power behind Lay's Potato Chips but now we know they also have the power to make new music for a global super star and set a Guinness World Records title. Science is always a lot of fun, but who knew it could be this powerful.
