978 people attended the event which was held at Alexandra Palace, in London, UK, on Sunday 1 July.

The former Great British Bake Off judge began the countdown to the start of the record attempt.

The attempt took place to celebrate Cath Kidston's 25th anniversary and National Cream Tea Day with tickets available to members of the public.

Cath Kidston has broken the previous record set by the British Consulate General Shanghai (UK) with 735 people.

Also present at the event was Melinda Paraie, Cath Kidston's newly appointed CEO.

"It’s been such an exciting project to work on and a massive tick on the bucket list of life!"

All of the event ticket sales, a total of £11,000, was donated to Cath Kidston's chosen charity, Friends of the Elderly.

Friends of the Elderly provide dignified care to elderly individuals, and run care homes that provide residential, dementia, nursing and respite care.

The cream tea consisted of one scone, cream and jam and cup of black English breakfast tea. All the scones were vegan and gluten-free, and dairy free cream and milk alternatives were available.

In total, the record included a staggering 250 litres of tea, 2,400 scones, and 4,100 pots of jam and clotted cream.

To qualify for the record attempt, participants had to eat one whole scone and drink one full cup of tea (including Mary!).
