All the records broken at the Sydney Marathon 2025

For the second consecutive year, Guinness World Records and the TCS Sydney Marathon, presented by ASICS, joined forces to celebrate all the records broken during the Sydney Marathon 2025.
Taking place on Sunday, 31 August, this year's event officially welcomes Australia as the seventh Abbott World Marathon Major.
For the first time in history, runners who finished the Sydney Marathon received a Six Star Medal, adding Australia to the original legs of the Six Star Journey: Tokyo, London, Berlin, New York, Boston and Chicago.
Established in 2000, the Australian long-distance race was inducted into the Majors in November 2024.
In a press release, Australia’s Minister for Jobs and Tourism commented: “Sydneysiders get behind a sporting event like no other city and we know more and more people will embrace the marathon, whether that is aspiring to complete it or getting out to support those who do.”
Record-breaking guests and elite runners further emphasised the global resonance of the event, with a lineup that included sports champion and multiple-record holder Eliud Kipchoge.
With many accolades and records to his name, the Kenyan long-distance runner holds the record for most wins of the World Marathon Majors (male).
However, among the over 35,000 participants expected for the race, many record holders from Australia and beyond were spotted in the streets of Sydney: familiar faces like Michigan runner Susan Ragon, the oldest person to complete the North Pole Marathon (female), and Simone Carniglia (Italy), who improved his existing record for the fastest aggregate time to complete the seven World Marathon Majors by a type 1 diabetic.
London-based record holder, DJ and broadcaster Adele Roberts also tackled the marathon to add another title to her long streak of victories, aiming to set a new world record by running the fastest aggregate time to complete the seven World Marathon Major races with a stoma (female).
Another record holder tackling the marathon was Japan's Masakazu Konno, who completed the fastest marathon dressed in a suit and dress shoes during the BMW Berlin Marathon 2023.
This year, he let the Force guide him and ran in a Star Wars costume.
Guinness World Records Adjudicator Brian Sobel and a dedicated team were on-site to verify the new records. After checking the costumes at the start line, they waited at the end of the renowned scenic course — which spans 42.195 km (2.6 miles) from Bradfield Park to the stunning Opera House — to announce the new record titles.
Out of 19 runners who attempted to seize a Guinness World Records title, a total of 13 records were broken or set at the end of the day.
The first runner to cross the finish line and earn a coveted GWR certificate with his medal was Mohd Syahidan Bin Alias (Malaysia).
The athlete, who smashed the record for the fastest marathon dressed in traditional Malay dress during the London Marathon in 2023, clocked a remarkable 02:44:12 and completed the fastest marathon in a school uniform (male).
This isn't the first time Mohd has broken a record in Australia: in 2018, he ran the fastest marathon dressed as a flag.

Italian mechanical engineer Simone Carniglia followed with a time of 02:46:19, successfully conquering another marathon and breaking the record for the fastest aggregate time to complete the seven World Marathon Majors by a type 1 diabetic.
Simone, who runs to raise awareness about type 1 diabetes, already broke the record for the fastest aggregate time to complete the six World Marathon Majors by a type 1 diabetic in November 2024, achieving an aggregate time of 16 hr, 8 minutes and 57 seconds after completing the New York Marathon.
"Every year, the TCS Sydney Marathon brings together some of the most motivating and determined runners from across Australia and beyond," said Adjudicator Brian Sobel at the end of the day.
"I’m always inspired by the race’s participants, but it’s especially a joy to witness the runners strive to break both their personal bests and the world record. This year, the 13 who achieved a Guinness World Record will walk away remembering their feats, having secured a place in the iconic pages of the next annual.”
