An unmissable yearly appointment for runners worldwide, the BMW Berlin Marathon and Guinness World Records have partnered to celebrate all the records broken during the BMW Berlin Marathon 2023.

While today Eliud Kipchoge secured his fifth Berlin Marathon victory, Etiophian long-distance champion Tigst Assefa smashed the record for the fastest marathon (female).

Ahead of the main race on Sunday 24 September, with a total of 11 record attempts for the day, the weekend opened with the inline skating marathon on Saturday.

Two Guinness World Records titles were achieved during the inline skate marathon of Saturday 23 September 2023: seasoned runner Jochen Glasbrenner broke the record for fastest inline skating marathon dressed as a film character (male) while Sarah Johann proved her resilience and achieved the fastest marathon on roller skates (female) with a time of 1 hr 59 min 03 sec.

This is Sarah's second official record title, after completing the fastest inline skating marathon dressed as a superhero (female) at the Berlin Marathon 2022.

But there was no time to rest: the day after the inline skating marathon, Jochen also conquered his second title of the weekend for the fastest marathon dressed as a barrister (male).

"It's been hard because it was very hot in the costume, but I did it and I'm very happy," he confessed.

On Sunday morning, thousands of distance runners reunited at the Brandenburg Gate for the event.

Opening the day of record-breaking, elite runner Tigst Assefa smashed the record for overall fastest  marathon (female), racking up the whopping time of 2 hr 11 min 53 sec.

Soon after, the winning couple formed by Andy and Caroline Brown crossed the finishing line, achieving the fastest  marathon with two runners handcuffed together (mixed) with a time of 3 hr 08 min 46 sec.

The couple prepared with a professional trainer to break the record, and ran to shine a light on the charity Get Kids Going.

"We both enjoy a variety of sports and we want to help others to have the same opportunities for enjoyment, regardless of ability," Andy and Caroline declared.

"Record-breaking at this year's BMW Berlin Marathon has given an opportunity like no other to those attempting Guinness World Record titles, crossing the line in the same place that earlier that day Tigst Assefa reached the pinnacle of the sport," said Guinness World Records official Adjudicator Will Munford.

"Those attempting Guinness World Records titles are on their own journey to greatness, and seeing people achieve that is something truly special."

In Berlin, we also encountered some record holders from previous years.

Masakazu Konno broke the record for fastest marathon dressed in a suit and dress shoes during the TCS London Marathon 2023 and doubled his titles with the fastest marathon dressed as a ninja.

"It was super exciting to get the second Guinness World Records title today," Masakazu said after the race.

"I must thank my family and friends and my audience, they made it possible! Thank you so much."

I want to make a big impact in the world and prove that, regardless of age, we can beat any challenge. - Masakazu

NHS nurse Joan Pons Laplana (former fastest marathon dressed as a glass) also returned on the track under the Guinness World Records flag, trying to break the record for fastest marathon dressed as a Christmas cracker

He successfully reached his goal, smashing the record and proving that he is Officially Amazing!
