Taylor Swift singing

Taylor Swift’s highly anticipated 15th studio album The Tortured Poets Department was listened to a record-breaking number of times on the day of its release, 19 April 2024.

With a total of 313.7 million filtered streams, it claimed records for the most day-one streams of an album on Spotify and the most streamed album on Spotify in 24 hours.

This figure combines streams for the standard 16-track album (232.2 million) and the additional 15 tracks on the double album edition, sub-titled The Anthology (81.4 million).

Both records previously belonged to Swift’s 12th studio album Midnights, which was streamed 184.6 million times when it was released on 21 October 2022.

The Tortured Poets Department’s most-played song is “Fortnight (feat. Post Malone)”, which was streamed 25.2 million times on its release day, making it the most streamed track on Spotify within the first 24 hours (surpassing Adele’s “Easy on Me” with 19.7 million streams) and the most streamed track on Spotify in 24 hours (overtaking Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You”, streamed 23.7 million times on 24 December 2023).

Spotify’s “Daily Top Songs Global” chart was dominated by the album on its release day, with the chart’s top 16 spots all being occupied by the standard album’s 16 tracks.

The album is the first to ever surpass 200 and 300 million Spotify streams in a single day.

The overall record for the most streamed track on Spotify belongs to The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” with over four billion streams to date, and the most streamed album on Spotify is Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti with 15.7 billion streams as of February this year.

The Tortured Poets Department was announced by Swift two months ago at the Grammy Awards during her acceptance speech for the Best Pop Vocal Album award.

Swift also won a fourth Album of the Year award at the event, putting herself ahead of Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon to become the outright holder of the record for the most Album of the Year awards won at the Grammys by a vocalist.

Having taken a short break after performing six shows in Singapore in March, Swift is set to continue her record-breaking Eras tour next month in France. Earning over $1 billion in revenue so far, it is the highest grossing music tour ever.
