Miley Cyrus’s break-up anthem “Flowers” is officially the most streamed track on Spotify for 2023.
The song generated 1.6 billion streams this year and has broken numerous records since its release in January.
Just days into its release, it set the record for most streamed track on Spotify in one week with 96,032,624 plays, and retains that record to this day.
The song set this record twice, first with the aforementioned number the week ending 19 January, and again the week ending 26 January with 115,156,896 further worldwide streams.
In just eight days, the song set the fastest time for a music track to reach 100 million streams on Spotify (female) and 112 days after its release, became the fastest time for a music track to reach 1 billion streams on Spotify (female).
Miley’s 2023 Spotify record beats the one set the previous year by former One Direction star Harry Styles with his song “As It Was”.
Hannah Montana actress Miley’s record-breaking song is rumoured to be about her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth, who she met when they starred together in movie The Last Song.
The lyrics “built a home and watched it burn” were an apparent reference to the 2018 wildfire that destroyed their home in California.
Fans also pointed to ‘clues’ in the music video that seemed to point the finger at Liam, however, Miley shrugged off the rumours, telling British Vogue: “I never need to be a master at the craft of tricking an audience.
“It will set itself on fire all by itself.”
The song hit the No.1 spot in charts across the world, including in the US, UK, and Australia.
It came from her eighth studio album Endless Summer Vacation, which also went to No.1 in many countries.
Miley has earned a few other Guinness World Records titles throughout her career:
• Highest annual earnings for a child actor – Miley made an estimated $25 million (£12.5 million) from acting in 2008
• Most entries simultaneously in the US top 100 in one week – Hannah Montana (played by Miley) had one re-entry and six new entries in the US Hot 100 chart in November 2006
• Most charted teenager – Miley scored her 29th US Hot 100 chart entry in November 2009 with her song “Party in the USA”
• Highest grossing film of a music tour – Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour earned the record in 2008 after it grossed $53.4 million (£26.9 million) in just two weeks
Meanwhile, Bad Bunny earned the most streamed album on Spotify of the year with Un Verano Sin Ti.
