The largest summit cross is the 39.5-m-tall (129-ft 7-in) cross that sits at an altitude of 2,291 m (7,516 ft) up Mount Caraiman in the Bucegi Mountains of the Southern Carpathians of Romania. The height includes the 8-m-tall (26-ft 2-in) stone-clad concrete pedestal on which it stands. Known as the Heroes' Cross, or the Caraiman Cross, it was built between 1926 and 1928 to honour the dead of World War I. The achievement was verified on 14 August 2013. A summit cross is a cross erected on or near the summit of a mountain. There are larger crosses in the world, and summit crosses at higher altitudes, but the Caraiman Cross is the largest such cross at high altitude.
