In January 2001, two groups of US scientists announced that they had slowed down light itself to a dead stop. Usually light travels at 300,000 km per second 186,000 miles per second. light is slightly slowed naturally as it passes through a denser medium, eg water or glass. The new results have used this property of light to extremes, allowing the light to be stopped altogether.
